Why are people choosing to remain single? Huffington post is one of my favorite news sources, because they capture a moment in our history without pathologizing it. More and more people are choosing to stay single. We see this with the oldest person in the world, who recently died, feel free to click here.
She had one marriage and separation in 1938 and chose never to remarry, eats 3 raw eggs a day, and voila: lives until she is 112.
Outlined in the Huffington Post are 17 quotes by various people on why they choose to remain single. I think we have one set structure for people as the emblem of health and this is misrepresentative of all the various paths that lead to fulfillment, and one of them is celebrating single hood as a choice whether it be for 6 months of forever. It is important.
Here is the link to the article. Here are some highlights from the article:
1. “I’m single because I’m not going to settle. I haven’t found a mate who has captured my imagination and is fully his own person.”
2. “I’m single because it’s a choice and because I don’t need someone to validate that I’m an amazing, caring, beautiful woman.”
3. “I find it hard to imagine there’s a man out there who’s mature and awesome enough to take on me and my four kids. He’d have to have a big heart. My focus right now is to raise my kids as best I can and work to pay our bills. I’m not averse to meeting someone who is worth it, I just don’t have the time or energy to look for him at the expense of my kids or my job.”
4. “I need to work on myself more before I can actively look for a partner. I’m not going to establish high standards for someone else and not for myself.“
Everyone has their reasons and their choices, it is important we see many versions of how wellness can appear, and one of them, not for everyone, but for some people is by choosing for a period of time to be single.
